Vocal Performance

sheet music
The Vocal Performance program offers a program of vocal development for students at all stages of accomplishment. The program will offer sequential levels in vocal technique, fundamentals of music, basic keyboard, sight-singing, and ear-training, solo repertoire, ensemble repertoire and music literature and history.

Voice class is held on a regularly-scheduled basis, wherein the students perform and critique each other, as well as listen to evaluation from the instructor. Other class periods will be spent in lecture/demonstration/practice or experiences such as guest performers and lectures and the completion of various projects assigned during the year. Students will also be given opportunities for independent study and practice. Juries will be given at the end of each semester.

Vocal Lab I (First Year)

The vocal student will be able to read basic sight-reading examples, as well as voice and choral repertoire at a medium level of difficulty. The vocal student will become familiar with the fundamentals of music notation and the keyboard. The student will have participated in a large group, as well as an ensemble, and will have performed two vocal solos for adjudication.

Vocal Lab II (Second Year)

The vocal student will be able to read voice and choral repertoire at a more advanced level of difficulty, to play a melody line on the keyboard, to discern major or minor keys, key signatures, and understand basic chord structure. The student will be able to demonstrate proper vocal technique through proper breathing, posture and healthy tone production for that level of vocal development. The student will have performed literature in both English and Italian. The student will have participated in a large group, as well as an ensemble, and will have performed two vocal solos for adjudication.

Vocal Lab III (Third Year)

The third year vocal student will study more advanced repertoire, including at least one other language besides English and Italian. The student will have attained some familiarity with the pronunciation of all music languages. The student should be able to recognize different styles and periods of music literature and be proficient in melodic and rhythmic dictation. Having performed with large groups and at least one ensemble, the student will have performed in solo festivals and recitals and will have developed a standard vocal repertoire of various styles of music.

Vocal Lab IV (Fourth Year)

The vocal student in the fourth year will understand transposition, four-part harmony, and will be able to read a part at sight at an advanced level of difficulty. Performances will have been given in both solo and group experiences. The student will demonstrate a general development of good vocal technique, as well as an expanded repertoire in both ensemble and solo material. The student will have sung in Italian, English, German and French, and will have performed one self-prepared selection.
