Visual Art

painting1
The magnet program in the Visual Arts is an advanced program in art, designed to develop students' personal and creative thinking skills, to enhance the student's knowledge of our artistic heritage, and to enable the student to make justified, informed statements about art. The program offers a concentrated sequential development of two and three-dimensional technical and intellectual skills. This unique curriculum provides an environment which supports and encourages individual pursuit and attainment of artistic excellence. Students completing the Visual Art Magnet Program are provided, through their unique experiences in specialized areas of learning, an excellent opportunity to prepare for entrance to higher educational institutions or job markets.

The first year in Visual Art will be an intense examination of design principles and techniques to establish a foundation for future studies in the visual arts. This will include studies in printmaking, sculpture/ceramics, basic drawing, and computer graphics.

The student enrolled in Visual Art in the second year will begin with a major emphasis on drawing, progressing through painting, and culminating in a consolidated Graphic Communications presentation. Drawing assignments will stress the development of individual drawing styles and the in depth exploration of various drawing media and techniques. Students will develop technical and intellectual skills of two-dimensional design.

The third year of Visual Art will focus on three-dimensional design and analysis. Class time will be spent in individual and group critiques, research and art history, as well as study and practice of a variety of techniques and media. Fundamentals of form, volume, space, line, and texture will be emphasized.

All graduating seniors with majors in the Visual Arts are required to compile a portfolio representing his or her chosen area of concentration, as well as representations of other media covered during their studies in the program. A portion of class time will be allocated to independent study and individual and group critiques and presentations. All Visual Arts majors will be required to exhibit a collection of their work for review at senior juries, which take place in May.
