Huntsville City Schools Magnet Programs
at
Lee High School
"Magnets
Attract!"

The program combines the elements of the technical aspects of digital video skills with the elements of broadcast journalism. Students will have the opportunity to work with other magnet programs in developing films, advertisements, websites, and documentaries. Students will learn the techniques of working behind and in front of the camera. Students will produce in-school and field broadcasts that would benefit not only the population of Lee High School, but the entire viewing population of North Alabama.
FIRST YEAR
The two primary goals of the first year Video and Broadcast Journalism students are to master the basics of production by learning how to operate camcorders, portable systems, sound boards, video software, and other applicable technology; and to learn the basic techniques of journalism, script-writing, storyboard preparation, and how to conduct interviews. Productions will include commercials, interviews, skits, and mini-documentaries. Students will have the opportunity to broadcast them via the Distance Learning Lab and on ETV.
SECOND YEAR
Students who have demonstrated expertise in first year basic media production and journalism skills will become familiar with the type of studio equipment that is available at Lee High School within the Huntsville City Schools’ system. Students will learn how to set-up and operate the equipment necessary for studio and remote video production, how to effectively shoot such productions, and how to handle post-production work, including non-linear editing and sound equipment. Students will further their broadcast journalism skills via interviewing, reporting, and writing skills, and will also study the legal, ethical, and technological issues that affect broadcast journalism. Students will learn to develop a program concept and follow through with production, post-production, and eventual broadcast. Students will produce a radio program and television field report. The broadcast, radio program, and television field report will become the first section of their professional portfolios.
THIRD YEAR
Students will acquire basic multi-media knowledge to strengthen their abilities to ask questions about what they see; to augment visual production skills with state-of-the-art technology likely to be encountered in the broadcast field; to provide for creative expression; to prepare for a media degree in college or the media workforce; improve media skills for any career path in the information age; to gain a deeper understanding of the language of visual communication; and to promote media literacy. Students assist in the production of special television programs for Huntsville City Schools, produce programs for outside clients, and have responsibility for sections of programming HCS ETV. They will be exposed to advanced production techniques, including non-linear editing, digital editing, computer animation, presentation software, digital photography, and multi-track audio recording. Students will also create, write, edit, produce, anchor, and manage broadcast programs for television and radio. The hands-on aspects will be added to the students’ portfolios.
FOURTH YEAR
Students will continue to advance their skills in all areas of production and broadcast journalism. Students will continue the real time visual and radio programs. Students will create their own independent broadcast projects upon approval of the instructor. Internships for fourth year students in and outside of the school system will be actively pursued. Students will also finalize their portfolios.
