Magnet Program Curriculum
(scroll down for links to individual programs)

The curriculum for the Huntsville City Schools' Magnet Programs, located at Lee High School, is identical to that of all other city high schools in academic areas. Students take seven 53-minute classes each day, and may earn seven credits per year. Twenty-four Carnegie units are required for graduation, including:

4 credits in English

4 credits in mathematics

4 credits in science

4 credits in social studies

½ credit in health

½ credit in keyboarding (can be earned at the middle school level)

½ credit in computer applications

1 credit in physical education (or its equivalent)

Foreign language is also a choice for the individual student. 2 credits are required to receive and Advanced Academic Endorsement on the diploma.

The remainder of credits are electives - magnet programs or other courses chosen by the student. A student enrolled in the magnet program receives 2 credits per year in their major area.

Opportunities are available from an array of courses and an academic plan suited to the needs of any student. A student may obtain college credits before graduation from high school though our Accelerated Pre-College Program. Advanced Placement courses are available in all academic areas.

The schedule at Lee High School is set on a seven-period day. An additional (Early Bird) class period is offered at 7AM to enable magnet students to schedule classes to help fulfill graduation requirements. Each class is approximately 53 minutes long. Students who are enrolled in the magnet program take four academic classes (core curriculum of English, Social Studies, Math, and Science), two classes in their magnet area, and have one additional class in either a graduation required class or an elective. Summer school courses are also available to complete graduation requirements.

Counseling in scheduling is available through the school counselors or with the aid of the magnet coordinator.
