Magnet Audition Requirements

Each program has different requirements for the audition process. To audition, you must fill out an application and return it, along with a $20 application fee, a copy of the current report card, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher in a related field.

Students may audition in only one discipline. Auditions for Fall, 2009 were held on Saturday, March 28 and on Wednesday, April 1. Watch this site for 2010 audition dates. Please indicate on the back of the application which audition you would like to schedule. Auditions begin promptly; please be on time.

A parent must accompany each student to the audition. During the audition time, the parents will receive orientation into the requirements of the program.

If a student is not prepared, or the parent / guardian fails to attend, the student will be denied consideration for the program.

Creative Writing

A portfolio of at least five original compositions is required. These may be of any writing genre -- poetry, essay, short story, etc. The student must possess a sincere interest in and commitment to writing. During the audition, the student will be asked to demonstrate creativity and writing skills in a timed writing exercise based on a given prompt.

Dance

Arrive in appropriate attire -- leotard, tights, and ballet skirt or jazz pants. Girls' hair should be secured neatly off the face and neck. Jewelry is not permitted. Students will take an audition class consisting of basic movement, classical ballet, and improvisation. Students will also be required to perform a prepared dance solo no longer than one minute in length. Bring a CD of the solo music. No costumes, accessories, or props are permitted.

Engineering

Student will participate in an interview with the pre-engineering magnet coordinator to determine intelligence, maturity, and commitment to the engineering programs. Strong grades in math and science are beneficial.

Orchestra

Strings, Winds, Percussion: Students must be willing to devote at least 30 minutes a day to practice. Strings and winds must perform scales from memory as asked. A list will be furnished prior to auditions. Percussionists must perform from memory simple rudiments: flam, long roll, and 5-stroke roll; and perform a simple two or three line piece of student's choice.

All applicants will perform a short solo demonstrating level of proficiency, demonstrate knowledge of basic musical terms, and perform a short sight-reading exercise.

Photography / Video

A portfolio of at least five photographs taken by the student is required or you may prepare and present an original media piece on videotape or DVD at least three minutes in length.

Technical Theatre Production

Applicants must show evidence of interest, aptitude and commitment in the technical theater by filling out a questionnaire at the interview. Students who have had hands-on experience should provide a resume at the time of the interview, along with two letters of recommendation, other than the letter submitted with the application. One recommendation should come from a member of the community not related to you. If possible, this should be someone with a background in technical aspects of some form -- sound, lighting, construction, design, etc.

Theatre Performance

Perform from memory a one-minute monologue from a contemporary play (no movie scenes) selected by the applicant. The student will be asked to take direction on the piece presented. In addition, the applicant will also be required to do a "cold reading" from a script provided during the auditions. A resume of previous performance experience and a photo no smaller than 4 x 6 will also be required.

Video / Broadcast Journalism

A portfolio of at least five original non-fiction compositions accompanied by a short video or photographs is required. Applicants must show an interest in the mass media. The student will be interviewed and given a written prompt to complete during the audition.

Visual Art

A portfolio of six or more pieces of artwork representing a wide range of media and subjects is required. Examples should include life drawings, painting, etc., which may include such subjects as landscapes, still life, or imaginative pieces. All wrk must be original and should include examples of drawing from direct observation. During the audition, the student will be required to draw a still life from observation. Student must also write a short essay on the subject, "Why Art Is Important to Me" to bring to the interview.

Vocal Performance

Perform from memory a short solo demonstrating level of proficiency. Bring a copy of the music, an accompanist will be provided; Demonstrate knowledge of basic musical terms; Perform a short sight-reading exercise.
