Magnet Program Admissions
Admission Guidelines & Process
Guidelines
The curriculum at the Huntsville City Schools’ Magnet Programs is greatly enriched through the provision of many experiences and the infusion of these disciplines into the academic program. The student audition and a parent/guardian conference are a required part of the application process.
Placement into the Magnet Program, located at Lee High School, is contingent upon meeting the following criteria:
* A student must meet the academic requirements as outlined in the Huntsville City Schools Official Student-Parent Handbook.
* A student must maintain a C average in the program in which they are enrolled.
* A student must progress in the magnet area and show growth, interest, and dedication which would be expected of a student of that magnet area.
* Huntsville City Schools requires that a student must pass all four of the core curriculum subjects: math, science, English, and social studies to be eligible for extra-curricular or special programs such as magnet programs.
* A student must remain in the selected magnet program for one academic year. If, at that time, the student wishes to withdraw or to apply for another program, he or she may do so.
In addition, students who plan to remain in their current program must sign a form stating intent to re-enroll during the spring semester. This form must also be signed by the instructor of the program in which the student is enrolled . If the teacher does not feel that the student has shown growth, interest, and dedication and has made an acceptable level of progress in the skills which are taught in the program, the teacher may refuse to sign the student’s re-enrollment form.
If a student is not prepared for his/her audition, or the parent/guardian fails to attend one of the scheduled student auditions and parent conferences listed below, the student will be denied consideration for the program.
Auditions
Students will audition in only one arts discipline. Creative Writing, Dance, Engineering, Orchestra, Photography/Video, Technical Theatre Production, Theatre Performance, Video/Broadcast Journalism, Visual Art, and Vocal Performance are the disciplines which we currently offer. Read the requirements carefully for the audition / interview for the discipline in which you are interested.
Auditions in 2009 were held on Saturday, March 28 and Wednesday, April 1. Dates for 2010 will be posted on this site. Please indicate on your form which audition time you would like to schedule. Auditions begin promptly; please be on time. We look forward to meeting you and hope you will relax and enjoy your audition
Parent Conferences
Parent conferences will be conducted during student auditions. It is mandatory for a parent to attend. You may call the magnet coordinator, 428-8150, extension 179, if you have any questions
Selection Process
All programs will have openings available at most grade levels. You cannot be considered for an opening in the magnet program unless you have successfully completed the audition process. In the event that there are more successful applicants than available openings, a computerized random selection process, or lottery, will be used to assign students according to those openings on a space-available basis. Students who do not pass the audition process may re-apply in another program. However, second choices will be considered only after all first choice placements have been made, if there are still openings available.
Transportation will be provided from each of the other zoned high schools throughout the city. The HCS Transportation Department makes all transportation decisions, including bus routes and schedules.
Transfers will not be allowed between magnet programs until the next application period. Once a parent has confirmed acceptance in a magnet program, the decision is final. Students may apply to another magnet program for the following year if they so choose. After accepting placement and reporting to the school, students will be expected to continue in the magnet program through the end of the current school year.
Placement in a magnet school is not confirmed until the acceptance confirmation letter is received in the magnet school office, along with the completed grade transcript. Any placement not confirmed by July 1 will be voided and the opening assigned to another student.
The acceptance confirmation is also an agreement that parents will provide a minimum of 18 service hours to the school and will attend at least two parent/teacher conferences per year. (Families with students attending other magnet schools will be allowed to equally split the 18 hours of service between the schools.)
If openings occur between the mailing of acceptance letters and the opening of school in August, they will be filled through the current applicant pool.
You can apply to attend the Huntsville City Schools' Magnet Programs at Lee High School by printing out and submitting the application form. Applications may be picked up at Lee High School, the Merts Center, or from the counselor at each of the middle schools. You may return your application by mail or by hand-delivery to the Magnet Coordinator at Lee High School, 606 Forrest Circle, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. The magnet program cannot be responsible for applications turned in by any other method. Please do not turn in your application anywhere else. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
