DMC is a performance class, as well as a learning experience. All students are expected to perform and enter dance events and competitions with the company. Mandatory performances include, but are not limited to, DMC's annual Spring Showcase, guest performances at other city schools, Panoply of the Arts, the Alabama Thespian Festival, as well as various choreography/performance competitions such as the Panoply Choreography Competition and Dance Educators of America. Emphasis is placed upon ensemble work with the company performing together. Though individual dancers may be featured within a piece from time to time, each piece is a group endeavor.
Dance classes are conducted in a two-hour block during the regular school schedule. During this time, students train in various dance techniques, study the techniques of professional dancers and choreographers, and explore the origin, development, and future of dance. Attention is also placed upon the physiology of dance and proper training and conditioning for optimum performance and general good health. Workshops with professional dancers are arranged whenever possible. Rehearsals for company performances are held after school and on weekends as needed. Senior students are required to complete a choreography project which includes the auditioning of dancers, choreographing, costuming, and staging a complete dance piece. These pieces are presented at the company's Spring Showcase.
