Magnet Program FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who may attend the magnet programs?
Any student entering, or already enrolled in the Huntsville City Schools, grades 9-12, is eligible to apply for the Creative and Performing Arts or Pre-Engineering Magnet Programs. Selection is based upon an interview or an audition with the teacher and specific racial and school zone guidelines.

How do I apply?
Obtain an application from the Lee High School office, the Central Office of the Board of Education, any middle or high school guidance office, or print out a magnet application (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).

What programs are offered?
The magnet schools in Huntsville are schools of choice where the curriculum is built around a focused theme.  The theme of the Magnet Program at Lee High School includes:  Creative Writing, Dance, Engineering, Orchestra, Photography/Video, Technical Theater Production, Theatre Performance, Visual Art, and Vocal Performance. These programs offer families a choice in selecting an educational program designed to provide enriching experiences and equitable opportunities for all students.  Magnet schools have a strong commitment to a diverse student population.

Do they teach the basics?
Yes. All magnet schools have a core curriculum that includes language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. They also are eligible to take advanced classes, other electives, and participate in sports programs as well.

Do the magnet programs use the same standards to assess students as other City Schools?
Yes. The magnet schools use the same standards, benchmarks and grade markers used at every Huntsville City School. In addition to traditional ways of assessing students, there is a real emphasis on performance-based measurements of student achievement.

How is the curriculum at a magnet school different from a traditional school?
The curriculum at magnet schools differs in two distinct ways. First, the core courses at magnet schools are taught from the perspective of the school's theme. Second, magnet schools offer an enhanced schedule of courses based on the theme. For example, a student can select specialized courses in their discipline and participate in many engineering-related or arts-related activities. These courses are taught in two-hour blocks, giving the student time to delve in depth into their area of interest

Do I have to pay to send my child to the magnet program?
A small fee is charged in each course. However, no large tuition charges are made because the magnet program is part of the Huntsville City School system.

How may I get more information?
Call the Magnet Program Coordinator's Office at 428-8150, ext. 179. Set up a visit to a school by calling the Counselors' Office at the school.  There will also be a club fair, orientations and tours of the school offered. In addition, the magnet students will be touring and performing at each of the middle schools in the spring. Have a speaker talk with your civic club, PTA, church or neighborhood group.  To request a speaker, call the number above. If you would like to talk to Linda Meigs, the Magnet Coordinator, you may also reach her at that number.
